A basin waste does a simple job, and the flap and click clack covers do it in different ways. The two share the same valve body, so the choice is really about the cover on top: how it works, how it ages, and what suits the basin.
The body of both designs is the same brass or stainless valve with a tailpiece and a rubber seal at the rim. What changes is the cover. A flap waste uses a flat rotating plate: tap it once and it tilts open to let water through, tap again and it flips level to hold water. A click clack waste uses a spring loaded center button: press down and the cap locks to seal, press again and it pops up to release with a click.
The covers wear differently. A flap cover has little inside to fail: the pivot may loosen from wear, and the rubber seal hardens over years of hot water and detergent. A click clack cover adds a spring and latch to that same seal, so a tired spring or worn latch joins the list. Either cover is only as durable as its materials allow.
That last point matters most. A quality spring steel button survives tens of thousands of presses, while a cheap one sags within a year; a precisely machined pivot outlasts a rough casting by years. The same goes for the seal. When comparing suppliers, read the spec sheet and test a sample rather than judging by shape.
Cleaning tilts toward the flap. The plate lifts off for rinsing and the open body is easy to wipe. A click clack cap unscrews in many models, but the shaft and spring area collect hair and limescale a wipe cannot reach. For weekly cleaning both work; for rentals or heavy use, the flap stays clean longer.
Installation is a shared advantage. Both are self-contained covers with no linkage through the overflow, so both fit shallow basins, slim rims and countertop bowls.
